A review is presented of a number of experimental verifications of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability as related to the generation of the topside equatorial spread-F, and a synthesis of the observations is made with parallel theoretical developments. Experimental verification of a number of hypotheses is given, and it is shown that: (1) radar plumes are co-located with the topside depletions in plasma density; (2) the depletions are magnetic field aligned and must result from an electrodynamic uplift of the whole flux tube, and (3) the relationship between scintillation and backscatter data in early and late stages of an event corresponds to an erosion of small scale content with time.
