Use the SMOV3a Bright Earth Avoidance time period for science exposures with the STIS CCD. Various kinds of targets are observed: {1} Deep slitless G750L spectroscopy of a high Galactic latitude field. In 50 orbits totalling 36, 000 sec of exposure using STIS CCD with grating G750L, we will be sensitive to Ly α emission from point sources at a 5-sigma detection level of 1.6 * 10^-17 erg cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1 at a redshift of 7. This is significantly deeper than ground-based surveys at these high redshifts, where atmospheric OH emission dominates the background. Surveys with Keck detect lower-redshift galaxies in the z=3-6 range at surface densities of 15, 000 deg-2 for limiting fluxes of 1.5 * 10^-17 erg cm^-2 s^-1 AA^-1. We thus expect to find 3 high redshift galaxies in this proposed spectroscopic deep field. Our field is chosen to overlap with the northern Hubble Deep Field on WFPC2 chip 4, the same region probed by the deep NICMOS observations. {2} Nearby late-type irregular galaxies {deep 50CCD & F28X50LP images}. {3} An interacting galaxy {50CCD & F28X50LP images, typically reaching the turn-over absolute magnitude of globular cluster systems}. {4} The region around a z 1.0 3CR Radio Galaxy, to test the suggested powerful radio galaxy-cluster connection at medium redshift. The data will be non-proprietary, and immediately put into the HST archive for use by the entire HST-using community.
