Measurements of O(+) ion drift velocity in the earth's magnetotail boundary layer are used to infer the north-south electric field (E sub z) component of the local electric field. The data set was obtained from ISEE-2 satellite measurements taken from February to June, 1978, when the satellite explored the earth's magnetotail region, and analyzed by computing the solar ecliptic X and Y components of the velocity beams. It is shown that E sub z is generally a substantial component of the field, and that it reverses its sign from the dawn to the dusk side of the northern magnetotail between X sub SM = -15 earth radii, and X sub SM = -23 earth radii.
