Fluctuations of the pressure in the subtropical high pressure systems influence climate over large areas and modulate the interactions between low and high latitude circulations. In this study, we develop a set of objective indices to investigate the seasonal and interannual variability of the northern hemispheric subtropical highs in observations and reanalysis. We also use statistical methods to study the physical processes associated with the interannual variations of the intensities of the subtropical highs during northern summer in the reanalysis. We find that the interannual variations of the intensities of the subtropical highs during northern summer are closely related to the monsoon activity over India through planetary-scale east-west divergent circulations. A similar link to the east-west divergent circulations from the continent of North America is also found. We also compare the observed seasonal variations of the subtropical highs with the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) model simulations. The results have shown substantial differences among the models.
