The magnetogram inversion technique (MIT) for calculating the electric field and currents in the ionosphere is discussed with particular attention given to its algorithm and the features of its main inputs. Several MIT variants are described, with emphasis on the MIT variant developed at the Siberian Institute of Terrestrial Magnetism, Ionosphere and Radio Wave Propagation (SibIZMIR), which ensures a short-term prediction of output data or their calculation in real time. Numerous examples of MIT application are presented.
