Peak-flux values and rise times of 2500 solar X-ray flares recorded by Solrad 9 (Explorer 37) between 1 and 8 A during the period from January 1969 to December 1971 were examined in relation to their duration and rise time/duration ratio. Results obtained from the statistical analysis strongly suggest that X-ray flares can be broadly divided into three definite types: impulsive, gradual rise and fall, and gradual rise-quick fall.
