We discuss the evolution of toy universes coupled to a massive scalar field. Under most initial conditions such a universe enters an inflationary phase from which it emerges naturally. When the universe is anisotropic or inhomogeneous, the anisotropy or inhomogeneity freezes during the inflationary phase.
