During the storm of March 5, 1981, observations of F-region winds and neutral temperatures were made from Beveridge (37 deg 28 min S, 145 deg 6 min E) using a Fabry-Perot interferometer to observe the OI 630 nm emission line. Very high temperatures for mid-latitudes were observed with typical values of 1800 K and a maximum of 2600 K. Large meridional temperature gradients of 0.6 K/km were observed. The meridional wind reached 270 m/s and was quite variable. Significant gradients occurred indicating that a wind circulation cell existed with its boundary generally equatorward of the observatory. The zonal wind was eastward after midnight reaching a peak value of 180 m/s at 0240 LT. Ionospheric data from Canberra (35 deg 21 min E, 149 deg 10 min E) and Hobart (42 deg 54 min S, 147 deg 12 min E) showed that the ionosphere rose suddenly between 2100 and 2300 LT and thereafter its height oscillated slowly with time. The initial rise can be explained in terms of the effects of both winds and temperature and the later variations are consistent with changes in the meridional wind.
