The cometary plasma and wave experiments aboard the Vega-1 and Vega-2 spacecraft as part of their dual mission to Venus and Comet Halley, are discussed. The 2.5t probes will monitor the cometary flyby three days apart at distances of the order of 10,000 and 3000 km from the nucleus, with relative velocity of 78 km/s. Information will be collected from electromagnetic field sensors, plasma, gas and dust detectors (Langmuir probes), and three optical instruments. Fourteen experiments will seek to confirm and specify the present hypothetical model of the solar wind/comet interaction, including the anticipated deceleration of the solar wind from 400 to 50 km/s when it crosses the bow shock. Measurements will be made of the density of the solar wind prior to cometary influence, and the plasma density, temperature and frequency spectra during the cometary transit. The Vega probes will try to identify the shock wave and contact surface. A schematic of the probe is included.
