Data from seismic refraction profiles to investigate the crust and upper mantle in the Celtiberian Chain are presented and discussed. A rather heterogeneous deep crustal structure with lateral variations can be inferred from the available data. In the central part of the chain crustal depths of about 32 km are coincident with those in the Iberian Meseta, whereas close to the Mediterranean shore the Moho is located at about 20 km depth.
The varying thickness of the crust can be interpreted in terms of different tectonic regimes. The shallowing towards the Mediterranean is associated with the Neogene rifting process which has its main expression in the Gulf of Valencia but whose effects seem to reach well towards the interior of Iberia.
The upper mantle has a structure typical for the Hercynian domain in Europe. A seismic phase reflected from about 80 km is the most important feature. This may be interpreted as a mantle discontinuity with a positive velocity jump or, alternatively, as an indication for the bottom of the lithosphere.
