During the adsorption of Pb, Cu, Mn or Zn by birnessite, 1 mol of H + is
released from the surface for each mole of metal ion sorbed. The
potassium appearing in solution during adsorption is not directly
involved in the reaction. This resolves some apparently conflicting
published results.
