Measurements of the luminance and polarization of the twilight sky were made at angles of 27 deg from the zenith in the directions of and opposite to the solar azimuth at the Pic du Midi Observatory during and following the Perseid meteor shower of August, 1979 in order to observe the effects of meteoritic aerosols on the optical properties of the twilight sky. An increase in sky luminance by factors between 2.5 and 3.5 due to the diffusion of meteoritic aerosols is observed at solar depressions between 7 and 10 deg during the peak of the shower, together with a decrease in azimuthal contrast. The polarization rates in both directions due to the presence of the aerosols are found to be positive, indicating the presence of conducting particles in the meteor shower. Further studies of the effect from stratospheric balloons are planned.
