On May 8, 2004 Cluster and Doublestar 1 (DS1) observed a series of Flux Transfer Events (FTEs) near the dawn flank magnetopause. Cluster was located at high southern latitudes and well inside the magnetosphere, whereas DS1 was located near the equator and close to the magnetopause. During the period of these events the IMF was predominantly East-West oriented. A high-resolution OpenGGCM simulation shows the FTE events (about a dozen) quite well reproduced by the model. Analysis of the simulation results show that the FTEs are generated near the subsolar magnetopause and subsequently convect around the dawn flank. There are no FTEs in the dusk hemisphere, contrary to the predictions of some models. The one-hemisphere-only characteristic of the FTEs can be explained by the combined action of IMF orientation and dipole tilt, but is not compatible with models of bursty reconnection.
