Measurements with a mass-spectrometer gave diffusion constants of helium in pure NaCl and in a sylvin mixture (45% NaCl and 55% KCl) in the temperature region between 500 and 650°C. An extrapolation of the measured values to the temperature region between 40 and 80°C showed good agreement with the values obtained from calculated corrections in age determinations. (Extrapolated values D He (80° C ) = 4.0 × 10 -17 cm 2 /sec; D He (40° C ) = 3.2 × 10 -19 cm 2 /sec; from age determinations D He (80° C ) = 1.2 × 10 -17 cm 2 /sec; D He (40° C ) = 1.2 × 10 -19 cm/sec.) A discussion is presented why these values differ from those derived by and . It was also shown that in sylvin, besides a pure volume diffusion, further processes of degassing occurred which were dependent upon the crystal structure.
