Minor Planets: Figures, Minor Planets: Numerical Simulations

Scientific paper

The authors study the applicability to actually existing objects of the numerical model of an asteroid which has the shape of a triaxial ellipsoid. They selected 11 asteroids (15, 20, 22, 23, 28, 31, 41, 43, 130, 354, and 532) with reliably determined pole coordinates and axial ratios of the approximating ellipsoids, these asteroids can be used as tests for new methods for the determination of pole coordinates. To the contrary, the shapes of asteroids 2, 3, 7, 29, 39, 44, 87, 216, 349, and 624 cannot be approximated by triaxial ellipsoids with the axial ratios determined to date. The coordinates of their poles need be redetermined by other methods not subject to the effects of asteroid shape.
