Radio Radiation: Uranus, Radio Radiation: Neptune

Scientific paper

The authors have found a negative correlation between the equivalent widths of methane absorption bands in the visible region and the mean brightness temperatures in the centimeter range in the spectra of Uranus and Neptune over the period 1970 - 1990. The sample correlation coefficients range from -0.69 to -0.88 at the optimum time shift between the realizations. In Uranus the flux variations near λ6 cm occur 2.2±1.4 yr ahead of the corresponding variations in the visual region. A signal is found to spread in the troposphere of the planet with a velocity as high as 0.3 cm/s. The authors hypothesize that the vertical circulation conditions in planetary atmospheres vary with time.
