Thin current sheets on the dawn flank of Saturn's magnetosphere have been observed since the first few orbits of Cassini, and by previous spacecraft encounters with Saturn. This current sheet has been interpreted as a magnetodisc current sheet [Arridge et al. 2006a], which was also discussed in Pioneer 11 observations 25 years ago [Smith et al. 1981]. Recent orbits through Saturn's magnetotail have directly observed the magnetotail current sheet for the first time. In this paper we present an overview of the observations and use magnetometer and plasma electron observations to characterise these current sheets, their structure, and dynamics. We use magnetic field observations and models to order the observations and present a superposed epoch analysis to classify and further characterise the encounters. Regular current sheet encounters in the magnetotail occur with a periodicity near the planetary rotation period, but transient current sheet encounters also occur at all longitudes. We discuss various origins for these aperiodic encounters, with a current sheet which is nominally displaced from the magnetic equator [Arridge et al. 2006b], and examine the hypothesis that wave-like distortions of the current sheet are responsible for these transient encounters.
