It has been suggested for many years that electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves make an important contribution to ring current ion loss during the geomagnetic storm recovery phase. More recently it has been shown that EMIC waves observed by GOES and POLAR are associated with extended plasma plumes seen in the plasmasphere and magnetosphere by the IMAGE EUV instrument. It is now recognized that the so-called "plasma islands" and enhanced plasma density regions seen earlier by elliptically orbiting satellites such as OGO-5 and CRRES are in fact just radial passes through attached plumes. In this study we will investigate the relationship between enhanced electron density regions observed in the radial profile by the Iowa Plasma Wave Experiment onboard CRRES, with concomitant EMIC wave data from the fluxgate magnetometer. The geomagnetic and plasma conditions under which the waves occur in association with plumes will also be studied. The results will provide an indication of conditions in the magnetosphere under which EMIC wave generation occurs and therefore could lead to ring current ion loss.
