The RHESSI (Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager) Small Explorer mission that provided ground- breaking imaging spectroscopy of hard X-ray and gamma-ray continuum and lines in solar flares, is based on a variety of innovative detector and imager technology developed primarily in NASA's high altitude balloon program. These include segmented, hyperpure germanium detectors cooled to liquid nitrogen temperatures with a low cost Stirling cycle mechanical cooler, rotating modulation collimators with high aspect ratio (50 to 1) fine grids for imaging complex diffuse sources, a precise solar aspect system, state-of-the-art pulse reset electronics, storage of every photon interaction with timing to a microsecond and energy to one third keV, etc. I discuss these innovations, their development, and the resulting new observations - including both solar flare observations and serendipitous new measurements of terrestrial gamma-ray flashes, solar oblateness, and extremely energtic radiation belt electrons.
