Discontinuities, such as tangential discontinuities and interplanetary shocks, are frequently observed in the solar wind. This study has focused on characterizing low frequency waves found by the Cluster spacecraft near such discontinuities and on the differences of the properties of these waves on either side of, and on different distances to, the discontinuities. Thanks to the multi-point measurements of the Cluster spacecraft it has been possible to determine the phase velocities of the different wave modes. This has enabled transformation of the observations from the spacecraft frame of reference into the more relevant plasma frame of reference. The k- filtering technique has been applied for this purpose, with the extra advantage that it has been possible to find more than one dominant wave mode at given frequencies in the spacecraft frame of reference. The wave characterization has thus involved the number of wave modes in different locations with the amplitude, wave- length and propagation direction determined for each of these wave modes. The polarization has also been included in the characterization where possible. The relation between the wave properties, the changes of these properties through the discontinuities, and the characteristics of the discontinuities themselves has been investigated.
