The inner heliosphere and the Earth-space environment are dominated by the inner boundary, the solar corona, which has been elusive to our investigations. Our observations of the Sun and its million-Kelvin corona have attracted the attention of specialist and lay audiences alike. But we lack a fundamental understanding on how the spectacular and ever-changing Sun connects to the equally dynamic heliosphere. The main reason for this lack of knowledge is that we are not currently able to observe the driving agent in the corona, its magnetic field. The TRT focus team on the heliospheric magnetic field has devised a strategic approach to this problem, focusing on data, theory, and modeling to constrain the near-solar environment. The team is addressing four specific science questions: 1) What is the spatial distribution of open magnetic flux in the corona? 2) How does the coronal magnetic flux change over time? 3) What are the physical processes governing these changes? 4) How can we use our knowledge of coronal and photospheric processes to predict physical conditions in the heliosphere?
