HAW-1 is an unpowered ocean cable system (two separate cables) between California and Hawaii that was monitored for a number of years for scientific and engineering research. Samples of the electric potential between the cable and ground were taken every two seconds during 1999 and are reported here. After filtering out the tidal signals we used a multitaper estimate of the power spectrum on all useable 20-day blocks of continuous data. Many clear, narrow peaks were seen above the 99.9% chi-squared significance level. At low frequencies, many peaks in the frequency range that encompass those that correspond to the solar oscillation modes of l=1 to l=5 could be identified. There are also many peaks in the 20 to 35 mHz range, frequencies much higher than those in the standard 2 to 5 mHz range that correspond to solar p-modes; these have spacings of approximately 135 μhz between the peaks. This spacing is characteristic of solar p-modes but, since p-modes are not expected in this range, their particular identification is unclear. The interleaving of the peaks suggests that l=0 and l=1 modes are being observed. The 135 uHz spacing implies that p-modes, and not harmonics of low-frequency modes from some nonlinear process are being observed.
