The electric field at low and mid-latitudes in the ionosphere maps out to the inner magnetosphere, and is a major driver of the plasma dynamics in the both ionosphere and the magnetosphere. Large scale features of the electric field such as Subauroral Polarization Streams (SAPS) can have a dramatic impact upon ionospheric and magnetospheric dynamics, and can create significant new plasma structures such as Storm- Enhanced Density (SED) plumes. The impact of these electric field structures upon the distribution of plasma in both the ionosphere and magnetosphere is being investigated through numerical experiments using the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere-Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIMEGCM) and the Rice Convection Model (RCM). Using SAPS fields reconstructed from the Assimilative Mapping of Ionospheric Electrodynamics (AMIE) algorithm as an input driver, TIMEGCM numerical experiments provide new evidence of the importance of the SAPS to the development of an SED plume. In addition, RCM numerical experiments using TIMEGCM neutral-wind dynamo-generated electric fields show the impact of thermospheric winds upon the structure of the inner magnetosphere electric field. These numerical experiments help to demonstrate the need for a comprehensive system approach in studying the ionospheric and magnetospheric dynamics.
