The extreme solar winds that follow CME (coronal mass ejections) events are known to produce geomagnetic storms and ionospheric storms. In this paper, we report the response of the geomagnetic field and global ionosphere to the CME events that flowed pass the Earth on 07 and 09 November 2004. The CMEs have produced a supper double geomagnetic storm, and affected the global ionosphere. The analysis of the ionospheric data from a number of instruments around the world (EISCAT radars, MU radar, ionosonds, optical instruments and GPS TEC networks) reveals that the CMEs have directly affected the high latitude ionosphere, while mid and low latitude ionospheric responses are delayed until the beginning of the main phase of the geomagnetic storm. The positive ionospheric storms observed at low and mid latitudes in the Asian sector are studied using the physics based models such as SUPIM and CTIP. It is shown that, contrary to the present understanding, the daytime supper equatorial plasma fountain (due to penetration electric fields) is unlikely to produce a positive ionospheric storm. The possible processes (direct and indirect effects of storm-time neutral winds) leading to the positive ionospheric storm are being studied.
