In addition to proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV center of mass energy the LHC will provide lead on lead collisions at an energy of 5.5 TeV per nucleon. ALICE is a general-purpose heavy-ion experiment designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. In these lectures we present a brief overview of the most important results obtained at RHIC and the SPS and discuss the prospects of heavy-ion physics with ALICE at the LHC.
