The seasonal variation of the ionospheric electron density at different latitudes and local times is strongly controlled by the neutral wind, neutral composition and ionospheric electrodynamics. Using radio occultation, the six FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC spacecraft provide vertical profiles of electron density in the ionosphere globally. Combining these profiles with global ionospheric total electron content (TEC) measurements from worldwide ground-based GPS receiver chains can give broad coverage of ionospheric structures. In this study, we analyze the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC observed ionospheric profiles at equatorial, low-latitude, mid-latitude, and high-latitude regions for different seasons. The ionospheric density profiles simulated by the NCAR Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) are also presented to compare with the observations.
