Incoherent scatter radars have over the years contributed strongly to our understanding of the ionospheric plasma processes at high latitudes. The incoherent scatter community has been an important driving force in the development of new topics and research fields, and currently a strong interest is shown in the understanding of small scale ionospheric phenomenon. Small scale structures are detected in a wide range of space instruments and parameters. Rocket and satellite observations report strong and rapid variations in electric and magnetic fields, and optical instruments detect very narrow and dynamic rayed aurora. One prominent feature in the data from the EISCAT UHF and VHF radars in northern Scandinavia, and the EISCAT Svalbard Radar (ESR) in Longyearbyen, Svalbard is the existence of extremely strong enhancement in power in either one or both of the ion acoustic shoulder in the ion line spectra, varying greatly within the typical pre-integration time of the radar experiments. These are signatures of unstable, growing ion acoustic waves. The enhancements in the ion line are occasionally accompanied by simultaneous enhancements in the plasma lines a signature of growing Langmuir waves. Recent measurements have shown that these strong scattering structures are spatially very narrow features. The New AMISR in Resolute Bay, Canada and the single AMISR face in Poker Flat, Alaska will through their new capabilities and location become important in the further development in the field of small scale ionospheric plasma structures. The current status of the field, and the new opportunities with AMISR in collaboration with the EISCAT systems will be discussed.
