The Jicamarca Radio Observatory will support the FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC mission through a number of coordinated observing campaigns. Some of the campaigns will be geared toward spacecraft instrument calibration/validation using conventional incoherent scatter modes at Jicamarca. Others will facilitate the development of new observing modes at the observatory. In particular, we plan to use the TEC profiles made available by the TBB/CERTO instrument to help validate incoherent scatter topside measurements made from long-pulse experiments incorporating so-called full-profile analysis. Full-profile analysis applies statistical inverse theory to the problem of estimating ionospheric parameters (plasma number density, temperature, and composition) simultaneously at all altitudes rather than in a traditional gated analysis. The method is in some sense optimal, fully accounting for the effects radar instrument function (two-dimensional ambiguity function), the complete error covariance matrix, and other experimental effects and biases. The poor conditioning of the problem is mitigated through regularization. The technique is calibrated automatically through the incorporation of Faraday rotation information, but it can only be validated with spacecraft observations. Once completed, the technique will permit comprehensive investigations of equatorial topside energetics, composition, and transport.
