Observations of stellar differential rotation by photometry and Doppler imaging show little dependence of the latitudinal shear on the rotation rate. This finding is reproduced by the theory of stellar differential rotation based on the Second Order Correlation Approximation in mean-field hydrodynamics. The theory also makes predictions about the meridional flow in stellar convection zones. The meridional flow is an important ingredient in the advection-dominated dynamo model, which correctly reproduces the solar cycle period, butterfly diagram, and Br-Bφ phase relation, thus overcoming the shortcomings of the traditional &alpha-Ω dynamo. The rather moderate increase of the meridional flow with increasing rotation rate predicted by theory is in agreement with the observed lack of a correlation between rotation period and activity cycle period.
