The Spirit Mars Exploration Rover has carried out extensive observations of Home Plate, a roughly 100-m wide, several meters tall plateau in the Columbia Hills, Gusev Crater, Mars. The imaging campaign focused on the outcrop at the perimeter of Home Plate, where an exposed stratigraphic sequence of layered rocks provides clues pertinent to the formation of the feature. The upper unit in the stack exhibits sub-parallel bedding with erosional forms that allow a 3 dimensional reconstructions of the bed geometries. Here, planar fits to individual laminae are constructed, tested for uniqueness and accuracy, and interpreted in terms of likely formation mechanisms. We find that at four locations spread along approximately 1/3 the circumference where sufficient imaging data was acquired, the dip angles exhibit a one-sigma range of 5 to 20 degrees, with a consistent azimuthal orientation down towards the center of Home Plate. The observations are consistent with volcanic models in which the pyroclastic materials are sourced at the center of Home Plate. Possible eolian reworking of the upper unit is indicated by cross bedding and sediment sorting and rounding. This new analysis demonstrates how digital elevation modeling from rover based imaging may be employed to derive regional structural geology relationships, probing the subsurface.
