In this talk, I will present a new pespective on the origin of a phenomenologically very successful model of quark mass hierarchy: the pure phase mass matrix. Two extra compact spatial dimensions are introduced. In addition, a scenario is presented, in which standard fermions "live" inside a thick brane whose thickness is of the size of the compact dimension. Fermions are "localized" inside the thick brane by domain walls. These "locations" along the sixth dimension determine the nature of the pure phase mass matrix: In one instance, it is hermitian and at another instance, it is non hermitian. The latter case requires the breaking of both the symmetry between left-handed and right-handed fermions, as well as the family symmetry.
