This paper presents a review of the mass determinations for galactic black hole candidates that have been derived from X-ray observations with previous generations of orbiting satellites. Recent observations illustrating physical properties determined for black holes in the Milky Way and in other galaxies are also summarized. Finally, new missions are described that will further test our understanding of black holes, extending our view to the event horizons.
