Preterrestrial cosmic changes and metamorphism of stony meteorites due to heating action are described and discussed. The alterations through action of heat are often of far-reaching consequence. We can distinguish between the action of moderate heat, not reaching the melting point of troilite and causing only a moderate amount of recrystallization of the silicates, as in the large group of white chondrites and resulting in the "pavement structures" of these. Or we may have a stronger heat action resulting in a cracking of the stone and a melting of the troilite and even of portions of the silicates forming--on account of the molten troilite--a black silicate melt, which is sucked up into the cracks of the meteorite and chilled fairly abruptly by the principal part of the stone, which is not acted upon by heat, and has the low temperature of interplanetary space. In this way the black veins of many stony meteorites are formed, these black veins being so common among the stony meteorites that Brezina used them to classify the stony meteorites in veined and non-veined stones. In the more strongly heated portions of the stones a gradual recrystallization of the splintery mass of minerals and even of chondrules takes place and such stronger heat action also leads to the formation of the crystalline chondrites.
