We propose to observe the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1040 with XMM-Newton. With an exposure of 80ks, we will be able to measure the continuum and Fe Kalpha line parameters with much better accuracy than possible before with ASCA. This will enable us to infer the location of the Fe-emitting gas. If the line originates from within 6 gravitational radii from the black hole, information on the black hole spin could be derived. Mrk 1040 is also bright enough to allow us to study Fe line variability down to a 15 ks timescale. The soft sensitivity of XMM-Newton will be used to characterise the nature of the soft X-ray absorption in this AGN.
