We propose XMM-Newton ToO observations of variable unidentified EGRET sources triggered by the AGILE gamma-ray satellite. Previous CGRO observations of these Galactic plane sources show variability on time scales of weeks to months. These sources have been observed by X-ray telescopes without convincing source identifications. However, without a contemporaneously active gamma-ray telescope it was impossible to tell whether the variable sources were active in gamma-rays during the observations. Using AGILE as a trigger, we will for the first time be able to test whether the variable Galactic plane EGRET sources have observable x-ray flux during a gamma-ray flare.
