We propose to observe the bright persistent neutron star low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) Serpens X-1 for 80 ks. Previous XMM data have confirmed a broad relativistic iron line from this source, which is the first evidence for such a line from a neutron star LMXB. Our proposed observation will measure the line-shape with unprecedented precision, and will address the following important science: (1) constraining the neutron star radius (crucial to understanding the state of matter in the super-dense core), and (2) the plausible first detection of the effect of neutron star spin on the accretion disk, and a direct measurement of the stellar angular momentum. These science goals rely on the unique qualities of XMM (e.g., large detector area, and good spectral resolution with minimal pile-up).
