The SCOUT-O3 balloon tropical campaigns are part of a new EC FP6 Integrated Project. The balloon flights are dedicated to the study of the tropical Upper Troposphere/Lower Stratosphere (UT/LS) dynamics, microphysics and chemistry, and particularly of the way water vapour is transferred in the stratosphere across the Tropical Tropopause Layer (TTL). The project is twofold: the flight of a number of sondes, small and large balloons in West Africa in the summer of 2006 in conjunction with the AMMA project dedicated to the study of the African monsoon; and long duration balloon flights near the Equator in 2007. The flight strategy is largely based on that used for a previous successful project HIBISCUS held in Brazil in 2004. The paper describes the components of the campaign, the balloons and the instruments to be flown, and the status of preparation.
