Balloons
Scientific paper
The French National Space Centre (CNES) in Toulouse develops different kinds of balloons for scientific experiments lasting from one day to several months in a stratospheric environment. Balloons are made with polymer films, which must respect technical specifications. The relevant material properties of their constituents (films, fibres, adhesive tapes...) will determine the flight behaviour of the balloon in the stratospheric environment. Thus, we have developed with the Space Environment Department of ONERA a panel of relevant tests. We measure the evolution of parameters at low temperature such as mechanical, thermo-optical, and permeability properties. We have also realised stratospheric flight simulation facilities to determine the evolution of these parameters for long duration balloons.
