Arguments based upon dimensional consistency and universally valid proportionalities lead to the axiom that physically significant quantities in a relativistic theory of gravitation must be invariant under a certain one-parameter group of scale transformations. When this axiom is applied in conjunction with the theory of tensorial concomitants, we find that, given fairly general conditions, the field equations of a metric relativistic gravitational theory must be those of Einstein's theory of general relativity.
