Mariner 9 photographs are used to define the original tectonic pattern in the Phoenicis Lacus and Coprates quadrangles on Mars (which contain the Valles Marineris, Noctis Labyrinthus, and Claritas Fossae areas), to determine details of the patterns in and around Valles Marineris, to contrast the patterns there with those of the Noctis Labyrinthus area, and to develop a chronology of the various structural disturbances that have affected the entire region. Structural diagrams of different small areas are presented, and the directions of the forces or stress fields that generated various apparent fractures are tentatively reconstructed. The patterns observed in Valles Marineris are found to be similar to those seen in part of the East African Rift, suggesting that similar tectonic processes may be involved and that Valles Marineris is, like the Rift, a product of crustal extension. Three main groups of tectonic directions are defined along Valles Marineris and Noctis Labyrinthus, two principal tectonic periods are identified, and a possible tectonic history of this region is summarized.
