Semiclassical cross sections, excitation rates, and transition probabilities obtained by direct solution of the Schroedinger equation for proton-collision excitation of the fine structure levels in the ground configuration of Fe(12+) are compared with those obtained by a quantum method in which interaction potentials are approximated by the long-range (quadrupole) term. It is found that discrepancies between the results of the two methods generally start to become noticeable at impact parameters corresponding to about a 5% penetration of the charge density of the outer electrons in terms of the fraction of the 3p electron charge contained within a sphere with a radius equal to the proton-ion distance at closest approach. The differences between the transition probabilities are shown to arise only from the different values of the interaction potential at small impact parameters. It is concluded that quantum effects are negligible for the Fe(12+) ion.
