Scientific paper

The current status of the theory of photospheric magnetic fields and the
solar cycle theory is reviewed. Some new observations concerning the
photospheric magnetic fields, the bright X-ray spots, and the ratio of
the umbra radius to the penumbra radius are discussed, and their
importance for these theories and their further development is examined.
