Following a review of solar wind physics, consideration is given to programs intended to provide in situ measurements of the interplanetary perturbations associated with solar activity. The ISEE program, designed to obtain data on solar wind waves and particles and X-rays involved in solar flares, is presented, and the French contribution to the program, involving experiments intended to measure electron densities at ISEE 1 and between ISEE 1 and ISEE 2 and investigate natural radio emission in interplanetary space due to electron beams and shock waves produced by Type II and Type III bursts, is described. The objectives of the planned NASA-ESA Out-of-the-Ecliptic probes are also indicated.
