To determine some optical properties of the Jovian atmosphere, strict asymptotic formulas of radiative transfer theory are used. Variations of the optical thickness of the atmosphere in the methane absorption band at 7250 angstroms are determined along the meridian. Measurement shows that in the cloud layer the ratio of the absorption coefficient in the band center to that in the continuum is 4.5. Since the analysis assumes the absorption band to be a discrete line, a certain degree of error is obtained when the derived formulas are used to evaluate optical parameters of the atmosphere.
