A short overview of a little-known hypothesis formulated by Julius Robert Mayer in 1848 is presented, following a brief account of historical interest in and theories about craters on the moon and elsewhere. The Mayer hypothesis claimed that the sun derived its energy from comets and asteroids that collided with it. The applicability of an analogous hypothesis to certain phenomena on earth is investigated.-
