The observations leading to and confirming the discovery of 1978 P 1
(Charon) are examined. Tidal evolution theory and evidence based on the
light variation of Pluto indicate that the Pluto-Charon system is in
circular orbit with a synchronous revolution and rotation of both
bodies. Recent data support the expectation of eclipse events.
