The model adopted for the quiet-time magnetosphere is a modified version of Hones' model (1963). The existence of a three-dimensional current system in the day-side magnetosphere is assumed. The magnetic field lines in the noon-midnight meridian are shown for both the quiet-time magnetosphere and the substorm-time magnetosphere. It is found that two current systems can reproduce the two major features of the auroral substorm in the noon-midnight meridian.
