Evidence for a high redshift of formation followed by passive evolution from the broadband colors of cluster galaxies may also be explained in hierarchical merger models where both age and metallicity are important. We propose to break the age-metallicity degeneracy by determining the metal abundance of elliptical galaxies at 0.5 < z < 0.9, using the Calcium triplet index at 8498, 8542 and 8662 Å, which has excellent sensitivity to metal abundance and is minimally affected by age. In this manner, we will be able to disentangle different scenarios for the epoch and formation mechanism of elliptical galaxies.
