We propose to obtain spectral identifications of optical emissions from Io's atmosphere. The emissions are clearly visible in Galileo images of Io in eclipse, but the spacecraft's broadband filters provide little spectral information. It is not known if the emissions are atomic, ionic or molecular, nor is it known if they arise from known atomic atmospheric constituents (S, O, Na, K) or new trace species. Our understanding of this major new phenomenon is fundamentally limited by the lack of spectral identification. We recognize that the observing requirements make this project very difficult to schedule, but its high scientific priority merits the effort.
