Studies of faint, distant galaxies have greatly advanced in recent years. It is now possible to observe hundreds of galaxies out to z=1 and in the range 3 < z < 3.5, yet galaxies in the redshift range 1 < z < 3 remain largely unexplored. Galaxies selected by MgII absorption lines detected in quasar spectra have been shown to be associated with normal galaxies up to redshifts of z=1.2. We are extending this work by obtaining deep near infrared J & K' imaging of fields around quasars with MgII absorption lines at redshifts 1.3 < z < 2.5. Our targets are selected from the z > 4 QSO survey by Storrie-Lombardi et al. (1996a), which has discovered a large number of MgII absorption lines at 1 < z < 2.5. The aim of the program is to identify galaxies which produce the MgII absorption lines observed in the quasar spectra. We propose to use ONIS on the 4m to reach J of 22 and K' of 21. At such deep photometric depths we should be sensitive to L^* and sub- L^* galaxy populations. We will observe our autumn objects in November and here request time for the spring sample. We plan optical imaging at Las Campanas of the same fields.
